About Karine Johnston
Karine is a licensed psychotherapist (LICSW) in private practice with specialty training in individual, marriage and family therapy; as well as systems work, group therapy and trauma recovery. She holds graduate degrees in Psychology, Social Work, and Family Life Education, and certifications in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management).
Karine has 14 years of experience as a therapist in various settings with varied populations. She has worked in psychiatric hospitals both in and outpatient where she researched and treated illnesses such as Schizophrenia and Alzheimer's Disease; she has worked in child and adolescent psychiatric clinics where she treated ADHD and PTSD in youths. She also worked with the frail elderly where she experienced end-of-life issues as well as caregiving issues; she's worked in community family clinics where she honed her skills as a systemic family therapist and delved into communication and relational issues including emotional abuse, separation and reconstituted family issues; she has extensive experience with trauma victims throughout the lifespan (rape and sexual abuse, physical and/or emotional abuse, domestic violence, medical abuse, and other crimes). She has worked in school settings with disadvantaged youths with behavioral and emotional concerns; and she has also worked with first responders (military, policemen/women, firemen and EMTs) alongside her beloved K-9 Mika offering stress relief to first responders at crises and disaster sites (fires, school shootings, terrorism attacks).
From an early age, Karine had high hopes of becoming an Engineer in the Canadian army. She was trained as an Officer-cadet in the Canadian army until an unfortunate accident ended her career. Though she was seriously hurt, she looks upon this experience as a growing experience, one that allowed her to learn much about herself, the world, as well as her true life purpose.
Karine is truly at home in various settings and is invested in treating people traditionally and holistically by helping to stimulate a greater awareness of one’s inner life and unifying the bridge that connects body, mind, and spirit. This is why she has studied Ayurvedic Medicine, Yoga Philosophy (she is a yoga instructor), Shamanism, Sufi Mysticism, and Holistic Care for People and Pets beyond her traditional studies in psychotherapy (which include Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Couple's Therapy).
Karine is currently deepening her understanding of Ayurveda, the oldest medical system in the world. She is in the process of becoming a Perfect Health Ayurvedic Instructor through the The Chopra Center University in CA. She looks forward to helping others discovery their mind-body type and recommend ayurvedic natural healing tools to balance, prevent and treat illness.
Karine practices alternative modalities
to help re-balance the self. These include: ayurveda, yoga, meditation,
homeopathy, herbs, general nutrition, aromatherapy, and flower
essences. She often refers clients to acupuncture, massage, and to
nutritional counseling for help in achieving this balance.
Karine is also a Certified Clinical Aromatherapist, and offers to you Holistic Aromalogy, a line of essential oil products to treat body, mind, and soul.
Karine is committed to a holistic perspective.
